Why evaluate? Print Page

It's been my policy to view the Internet not as an 'information highway,' but as an electronic asylum filled with babbling loonies.

-Mike Royko

Why is it important to evaluate Internet sites?

  • Any can create and publish an Internet site, regardless of subject expertise or knowledge
    • Web page creation software makes it easy for anyone to create a professional looking web page
  • No standards exist to ensure the quality and accuracy of information on a web page
  • Academic print resources have a review process, there is no such thing in regard to individual websites
  • Even websites produced by well known entities need to be used with caution
    • Websites created are often created to persuade the unwary user
